The Challenge
Birders needed a modern, mobile-first way to log and share their sightings. Existing solutions were outdated, desktop-focused, and lacked community features. I set out to build an app that made birding more accessible and social.
The Solution
Limosa is a Flutter app for iOS and Android with Mapbox maps and geolocation, plus a Next.js web app and admin. Behind them sits a Fastify and TypeScript API on MongoDB, using geospatial indexes to find nearby sightings fast. Photos, audio and video run through an S3 and ffmpeg pipeline, with AI species identification and Firebase for sign-in and push. It runs on cloud-native infrastructure, deployed automatically.
